FACTS OR SNUB?

The VMAs have officially dropped their nominees, and before we start celebrating, before the moon person trophies start appearing in people’s Instagram stories, we need to have a conversation.

Because what exactly are we doing here?

Forget the Grammys for a minute. The MTV Video Music Awards are their own beast. This is the ceremony where artists don’t just show up they show out. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to walk away with that iconic Moon Person?

But then we saw the Song of the Year nominees.

And our first reaction was:Facts or snub?

The list includes “SWIM” by BTS, “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean, “Choosing Texas” by Ella Langley, “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, “Stateside” by Zara Larsson and PinkPantheress, “where is my husband?” By Raye and “Bring Your Love” by Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter .And listen, we’re not here to disrespect anyone. These are artists who made music that clearly connected with audiences. They earned their places. But nominations aren’t just about whether a song is good. They’re about impact. And that’s where things get complicated.Because if we’re talking about cultural impact, chart presence, conversation and the sheer ability of a song to dominate the year, some very obvious names are missing.

Let’s start with Taylor Swift.

Where is “The Fate of Ophelia”?

Seriously. You cannot tell us that this song and its music video didn’t become part of the cultural conversation. Whatever your opinion of Taylor Swift is, pretending that her biggest moments don’t have an impact would be ridiculous.

This wasn’t some song that quietly existed in the background. It was everywhere. The video was discussed. The visuals were dissected. The song was debated. Fans turned everything into theories. Social media had a field day.

And yet somehow, when the VMAs sat down to decide their Song of the Year nominees, we’re supposed to just shrug and say, “Well, maybe next time.”No.That is a snub.

And then there’s Olivia Rodrigo.

Where is Olivia?

If the committee didn’t want to nominate “The Cure” or “Drop Dead,” fine. But you’re telling us that there wasn’t room for Olivia Rodrigo somewhere on this list?

Let’s be serious.

You seem pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love was not some random album released into the void. Olivia has built an audience around turning emotional chaos into stadium-sized pop songs, and her ability to turn a feeling into a cultural moment is precisely the kind of thing award shows claim to celebrate. So where is she?

This is not about saying the other nominees don’t deserve their recognition.

They do.

BTS deserves their flowers. Olivia Dean deserves her flowers. Ella Langley deserves her flowers. “Golden” has clearly become a phenomenon. Zara Larsson and PinkPantheress have a song people are talking about. Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter is a pairing that practically screams “VMAs.” And Raye is just breath taking

But that’s exactly why the omissions stand out.

When you’re putting together a category this competitive,

the question isn’t simply:

“Is this song good?”

It’s:“What did this song DO?”

Did it change the conversation?

Did people remember it?

Did it become part of the year’s soundtrack?

Did it dominate culture beyond the streaming numbers?

Did people make videos about it, argue about it, recreate it, parody it, quote it, dress like it, obsess over the music video?Because if those are the questions we’re asking, then the absence of Taylor and Olivia becomes even harder to understand. And this is only the beginning.

The VMAs have released one major piece of the puzzle, and we’re still waiting for the other categories.

So maybe—just maybe—the committee has something up its sleeve.

Maybe Olivia will have her moment somewhere else.Maybe Taylor’s massive presence will become clearer once the rest of the nominations arrive. And let’s not forget that Taylor is already reportedly the second-most-nominated artist at this year’s ceremony, behind Madonna, with nine nominations.

So this isn’t an argument that Taylor has been completely ignored. It’s an argument about where she’s being recognized.Because sometimes the snub isn’t about getting no nominations.Sometimes the snub is getting recognized everywhere except where you think the recognition matters most.

The VMAs are supposed to celebrate music videos and the cultural moments surrounding them. They’re supposed to understand the difference between a song that was successful and a song that became a moment.

And that’s why we’re asking:Facts or snub?

Maybe we’re being dramatic.Maybe the VMAs committee knows something we don’t.

Maybe the remaining categories will completely change this conversation. But right now?

We’re looking at this list and asking one very simple question:

Taylor and Olivia… where are you?

Because if this is supposed to be a celebration of the biggest musical moments of the year, some of us are still waiting to see the moments that we actually remember. The VMAs have spoken.

Now the fans have something to say.
