THEE VMAS 2026…

BY SSEGAWA HUZAIRU IBRAHIM/ Thursday, 8th October, 2026
Kampala- If the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards were supposed to remind us why we fell in love with MTV in the first place, congratulations: they understood the assignment.
On September 27, the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles became a time machine disguised as an awards show. Snoop Dogg returned as host for the third time, Madonna practically moved into the building, Nirvana showed up to collect the Video Vanguard Award, George Michael received a tribute, Dolly Parton was remembered, and somehow Yung Lean ended up performing while eating an ice cream cone.Yes. An ice cream cone.
The VMAs were back in their nostalgic era and apparently, MTV decided subtlety was not invited.

So i start with say if there was one person who owned the night, it was Madonna. The Queen of Pop walked into the VMAs with 13 nominations and walked out with seven awards, tying Lady Gaga’s record for the most wins in a single night.
Seven.
At this point, the question wasn’t whether Madonna was winning. It was whether everyone else was simply attending her victory party.
Madonna was crowned Artist of the Year, while she also took home Best Dance for Confessions II,The Film and Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love.

And then came her opening performance.
Madonna opened the show with Sabrina Carpenter at the piano for Bring Your Love, before launching into the Danceteria Afterhours remix with Charli XCX. The performance was everything one would expect from Madonna, grimy, theatrical, provocative and just slightly unhinged.
There was a bathroom. There was a club. There were cameos from Debi Mazar, Julia Garner, Seth Rogen, Sombr and others. And Seth Rogen lit a blunt onstage.Because apparently this was the kind of workplace environment MTV was offering.
Madonna’s acceptance speeches were equally chaotic. While accepting Best Dance, she admitted she was “kind of unclear what this award is for” before pulling out a laser prop connected to the butt laser style from her performance. Then came the Sabrina Carpenter story.Madonna revealed that she personally had to DM Sabrina after her team took five days to respond to the collaboration request.
Five days.
Madonna really said, “Fine. I’ll do it myself.”
Madonna may have dominated the scoreboard, but Taylor Swift took home the night’s biggest prize.Swift won Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia, extending her record as the most awarded artist in VMA history.

She also won Best Direction for Opalite and received the inaugural Artist Director Honors.
And because apparently three major moments weren’t enough, Taylor premiered her self directed music video for Patient Zero, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell in a thriller style story where Swift plays a ghost.
Because when Taylor Swift gets a directing award, what better way to celebrate than by dropping another music video?Taylor dedicated her Video of the Year win to the late Dolly Parton, adding an emotional note to what was otherwise a night filled with spectacle.
BTS weren’t leaving empty handed either.
The group won Song of the Year for Swim, alongside wins for Best K-Pop and Best Group.
Three awards. Not bad for a night’s work. And while K-pop was already having a moment, LISA decided to make history of her own.
LISA won Best Pop for Dream featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, becoming the first K-pop artist to win the category. And then she delivered one of the night’s most talked about performances.
Her debut of SaWaDiKa was essentially a love letter to Thailand, complete with Bangkok skyline visuals, rapid choreography and, because apparently a normal stage wasn’t enough.
The performance was energetic, theatrical and unapologetically LISA.Even her acceptance speech carried emotion as she celebrated the historic win.K-pop didn’t just attend the VMAs this year.It left fingerprints.
The awards weren’t exactly short on star power.
Olivia Rodrigo took home Best Alternative for the cure.Bruno Mars won Best R&B for I Just Might.Cardi B, featuring Kehlani, won Best Hip-Hop for Safe.Bad Bunny claimed Best Latin for NUEVAYoL.And Ella Langley took home Best Country for Choosin’ Texas.
Meanwhile, Sienna Spiro won Best New Artist, proving that even in a night dominated by legends and established superstars, there was still room for a new name to steal some attention.
One of the night’s most emotional moments belonged to someone who wasn’t physically there.Kacey Musgraves paid tribute to Dolly Parton with a stripped-back performance of I Will Always Love You.Just Kacey. A piano. And, naturally, a giant wig. No shade though.
The performance was followed by a video of a younger Dolly, turning what could have been another flashy awards-show segment into something much more intimate.Taylor Swift’s dedication of her Video of the Year award to Dolly made the tribute even more poignant.
For all the chaos of the VMAs, there were moments when the room remembered exactly why music matters.
The George Michael tribute brought together Sombr, RAYE, Teddy Swims, Adam Lambert and others.Sombr performed Faith and Father Figure. RAYE took on I Knew You Were Waiting for Me. Teddy Swims delivered Careless Whisper, while Adam Lambert and others brought Freedom! ’90 to the stage. The tribute was ambitious. The reception? Mixed. Some viewers questioned the lineup, proving once again that tribute performances are basically musical group projects where everyone watching thinks they could have cast it better.RAYE also delivered a fiery performance of Where Is My Husband! dressed entirely in red, mirroring the visual world of the song.
The surviving members of Nirvana…Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, accepted the Video Vanguard Award, presented by Chuck D.
And Pat Smear casually lit a cigarette during the speech.Of course he did.
Because nothing says “classic MTV” quite like a legendary rock band accepting a lifetime achievement-style award while someone lights a cigarette onstage. The moment quickly became one of the night’s viral highlights.

Snoop Dogg returned to host the VMAs for the third time, and naturally, he wasn’t about to let the evening behave itself. His opening knock-knock joke ended with the immortal phrase:
“DEEZ NUTS.”
Welcome to the VMAs.The show itself also started roughly 15–20 minutes late because an NFL game ran over.Because apparently even MTV has to wait for football. Then there was Yung Lean. While performing, he held an ice cream cone instead of a microphone and occasionally ate it.At some point, you stop asking questions.
You simply accept that you’re watching the VMAs.
Well,Perhaps the biggest winner of the night wasn’t Madonna, Taylor, BTS or LISA.
It was MTV itself. The 2026 VMAs felt deliberately nostalgic. Madonna returned to the stage. Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award. George Michael and Dolly Parton were celebrated. Snoop Dogg hosted. Charli and Pink pantheress throwing shade through looks, and many other moments.
Maybe that’s what the VMAs were always supposed to be. A little glamorous. A little ridiculous. A little nostalgic. And absolutely impossible to look away from.
