ENTERTAINMENT WEEK

BY SSEGAWA HUZAIRU IBRAHIM/ Friday 25th September,2026.

Kampala- There are weeks when the entertainment industry behaves normally. This was not one of them. From the MTV Video Music Awards preparing to descend upon us, to Swifties turning random vocabulary into forensic evidence, to Rosé being accused of borrowing from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS universe, and Usher apparently deciding that democracy is overrated because he can simply crown himself King of R&B  pop culture has once again reminded us that peace was never an option.

THE VMAs ARE COMING AND THE TROPHIES ARE ALREADY CAUSING DRAMA

The VMAs are happening this Sunday, and naturally, the biggest conversation is not simply about who is performing, who is nominated, or who will walk away with a Moon Person.Because apparently, one Moon Person was not enough.

The VMAs have reportedly introduced a new honour that will be awarded specifically to Taylor Swift, adding another chapter to an already ridiculous VMA résumé.And if there is one person who knows the VMAs like the back of her hand, it is Madonna.

Madonna remains the most nominated artist in VMAS this year, with Taylor Swift following closely behind  which is honestly the sort of statistic that makes you realize these women have been collecting Moon Persons while the rest of us have been collecting unfinished assignments.

Madonna has spent decades turning the VMAs into her personal theatre stage. Taylor, meanwhile, has practically built a second home inside the ceremony, whether she is performing, winning, reacting dramatically in the audience, or giving the internet enough material to analyse for the next six business months. So yes, Sunday is coming. And somewhere, a Swiftie is already zooming into the carpet texture looking for an Easter egg.

SWIFTIES HAVE ENTERED THEIR FORENSIC ERA

Speaking of Swifties…Nobody tell them to calm down.Taylor Swift has apparently been dropping Easter eggs surrounding what fans believe could be clues about her upcoming era, and naturally, the Swifties have responded with the only reasonable reaction: investigative journalism.

Every colour is suspicious.Every number is suspicious.Every word is suspicious.Every direction is suspicious.

At one point, Taylor’s appearance in an SVU-related skit at the Emmys sent fans into another spiral, with words and phrases including “saccaride,” “Aries,” “from the vineyard,” and “north or south” being dissected as potential clues. Now, whether these words actually mean anything is another question entirely.

But that has never stopped the Swiftie FBI.Taylor could probably say, “I forgot my umbrella,” and somewhere online someone would be drawing a 47-page connection between umbrellas, reputation, Shakespeare, the number 13 and a cryptic photograph from 2014.And honestly? At this point, we should simply let them work.

ROSÉ, OLIVIA RODRIGO AND THE GREAT ‘NEW TRICKS’ DEBATE

Meanwhile, over in the BLACKPINK universe, Rosé has found herself facing backlash following the release of her new track, “New Tricks.”

The controversy? Some listeners believe the song and its aesthetic lean heavily into the territory Olivia Rodrigo established during her GUTS era.

And the internet, being the peaceful and forgiving place that it absolutely is not, has already started throwing around the dreaded word:Copycat.

Critics have pointed to similarities in the attitude, pop-rock styling and overall rebellious energy, arguing that Rosé appears to be stepping into a space that Olivia made particularly recognizable with GUTS.

Others, however, have pushed back against the comparisons, arguing that two artists occupying a similar pop-rock lane does not automatically mean one copied the other.

And that distinction matters.

Because apparently, in 2026, if two women pick up a guitar, wear eyeliner and sound vaguely angry, the internet immediately schedules a courtroom hearing.Olivia Rodrigo is Olivia Rodrigo.

Rosé is Rosé.The real question is whether “New Tricks” can establish its own identity once the comparison machine finally gets bored.

USHER CROWNED HIMSELF KING OF R&B AND THE INTERNET HAD QUESTIONS

Then there is Usher.A man who apparently looked at the entire R&B monarchy, checked the throne, and said:

“Actually, that belongs to me.”During a recent appearance, Usher was presented with a crown and proceeded to crown himself the King of R&B.Subtle?

Absolutely not.Entertaining?Completely.And controversial?

Of course.Because you cannot simply place a crown on your own head and expect the internet not to summon every R&B singer who has ever touched a microphone.

But Usher does have the résumé to make the conversation interesting.

This is the man behind “Yeah!”, “U Got It Bad,” “Burn,” “Confessions Part II,” “OMG” and a catalogue that helped define mainstream R&B for an entire generation.

So while people may debate the title, the influence is difficult to ignore.

The conversation becomes even messier when his more recent commercial performance enters the room.

His latest album did not exactly arrive with the same cultural earthquake as Confessions, and critics and listeners have been discussing its reception accordingly.

But perhaps that is the beauty of the R&B crown. You can question the album. You can question the title. You can question the crown. But Usher will probably still be somewhere in the background singing “Yeah!” while the rest of us argue.

AND THIS WEEK WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NORMAL?

Between the VMAs preparing for Sunday, Taylor Swift turning vocabulary into a national investigation, Swifties decoding clues like they are solving a government conspiracy, Rosé facing Olivia Rodrigo comparisons, and Usher physically crowning himself King of R&B, the entertainment industry has officially entered its “everyone grab your popcorn” phase.

And honestly? We have not even reached Sunday yet. That is the frightening part.
