MUHOOZI TO LEAD BIGGEST MARCH ON TURKISH EMBASSY: PRODUCE LUMBUYE OR ELSE

KAMPALA- Politics is heating up again between Kampala and Ankara. The Chief of Defence Forces and Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered his supporters to stage what he calls the biggest demonstration Uganda has ever seen at the Turkish Embassy on 1st September.
Gen. Muhoozi posted on X on Sunday night at 8:48 pm. He tagged Hon. Daudi Kabanda and Hon. Twalla Fadil and wrote that he wants the biggest demonstration at the Turkish Embassy on the 1st of September. The post had attracted over 75,000 views in just one hour.
Daudi Kabanda replied an hour later. He said PLU is going to shake Kampala on 1st September. He said the Turks have been given enough time to produce Lumbuye but they have deliberately refused. He said they will now know that Uganda is a sovereign state.
The issue is about Fred Kajjubi Lumbuye. Lumbuye is a Ugandan blogger who lives in Turkey. He has been in Turkey since 2013 and is known for criticizing President Museveni and the government on social media. The government accuses him of spreading false information and propaganda. Police say he has 15 charges against him.
In 2021, Uganda announced that Lumbuye had been arrested in Turkey and would be deported. There was heavy deployment at the Turkish Embassy in Kololo at that time. But he was not deported. He was released by a Turkish court and allowed to stay. Since then the government has been trying to get him back through Interpol but has failed.
For Gen. Muhoozi, this is now a political issue about sovereignty. He has been saying that Turkey must respect Uganda and hand over Lumbuye. Earlier this year he even threatened to expel the Turkish Ambassador and close the embassy if Turkey does not act.
The PLU Secretariat has now put it in writing. In an official notice signed by General Secretary Rt. Hon. Twalla Fadil, all PLU members are ordered to gather at Plot 7 Sadler Lane in Naguru at 8:00 am on Tuesday 1st September. From there they will march together to the Turkish Embassy.
This will be the first big test for the new PLU leadership. Twalla Fadil is the new General Secretary after Daudi Kabanda stepped down. The march will also show how much power PLU still has to mobilize crowds in Kampala.
But the move is raising questions. Muhoozi is still the serving Chief of Defence Forces. The army is not supposed to take part in politics. Opposition leaders say using PLU to protest against a foreign embassy puts Uganda’s diplomatic relations at risk. Turkey is one of Uganda’s big partners in construction, trade and investment.
For now all eyes are on 1st September. Whether the protest will be peaceful or whether police will allow it is not clear. What is clear is that the Lumbuye case, which started five years ago, is back at the center of Uganda’s politics.
